22: What Happens After The Brace?

What happens after the brace? This is an important question that pops up when patients are wearing a scoliosis brace. It is usually followed by: How do I even know if I’m done wearing a brace? In this week’s episode, Dr. Mandy answers both of those questions and gives you some next steps to consider.



Dr. Mandy’s professional opinion: If you have a brace that still fits you, wearing it 6-8 hours a day (usually at night) can be helpful management to keep your spine healthy and strong. Questions to consider for what happens after the brace:

  • What’s realistic for your life right now?
  • Females: Are you two years from your first menstrual cycle?
  • What’s working well for you right now with your brace?
  • Are your growth plates closed, or are you still growing?
  • What’s not working well for you right now with your brace?
  • Have you grown recently in height or weight?
  • What are your specific needs due to your scoliosis diagnosis?
