3: The Red Flags of Scoliosis

The red flags of scoliosis can be easily missed if you don’t know what to look for. As a parent, and a scoliosis chiropractor, I will tell you to pay attention to your intuition – it is always right. In this week’s episode, you’ll discover what you need to be aware of to make sure scoliosis is managed well. You’ll also learn who should get checked for scoliosis and when.

3 Red Flags of Scoliosis:

  1. You or your child have never had a spinal check done. Schools used to do complimentary scoliosis checks, but unfortunately they no longer do this. Complimentary spinal checks can be done with your scoliosis chiropractor. Just be sure that you have your scoliosis check done by someone who knows what to look for.
  2. You’ve been told that you, or your child, have a curve in your spine but no x-rays have been done. This happens a lot. In fact, for patients that are in dance or pageants, they might hear during their dress alteration fitting that one side of their hip is higher or there is something wrong with their posture. This is a red flag that needs to be checked and x-rays are the only way to get an accurate view of what is actually going on with the spine. If you’ve ever been told that you or your child have a curve in your spine – you need to have a very specific kind of x-ray done! Check with your scoliosis provider for an accurate x-ray referral.
  3. You or your child have had x-rays but your provider has not had a conversation with you about the results or shown them to you. In order to get the best care, you need to make sure you have all of the information. Ask to see your x-rays and have that conversation with your provider. And if your provider isn’t having those conversations with you, reach out to a specialist for a second opinion. You can contact our office for an in-person or virtual consult.
